Nyboma

Profile

Kanta Nyboma, widely known as Nyboma, is one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in the history of Congolese rumba. Born in 1952, he emerged as a leading vocalist during the genre’s golden era, becoming renowned for his unmistakable golden tenor and refined vocal control. His voice has remained a defining presence in Congolese music for more than five decades and is regarded as one of the defining vocal signatures of Congolese rumba’s golden era.

Nyboma first rose to prominence with Les Kamale and later with Orchestre Lipua Lipua, where his vocal style and melodic phrasing became central to the development of Congolese rumba during its golden era. His work during this period also contributed directly to the evolution of the genre, particularly in the development of the sebene-driven vocal approach that would become central to Congolese dance music.

His solo catalogue includes enduring classics such as “Moyibi” and “Nina”, recordings that remain widely recognised across Africa and the diaspora. “Double Double”, one of the most played and widely circulated Congolese rumba recordings of its era, further cemented Nyboma’s status as a leading voice of the genre.

Over the course of his career, Nyboma collaborated with many of the most important figures in Congolese music, including Franco Luambo, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Pépé Kallé, Madilu System, Mbilia Bell, Faya Tess, and Koffi Olomidé. These collaborations positioned him alongside the pillars that defined Congolese rumba at its international peak.

As a founding member and lead voice of Kékélé, Nyboma played a pivotal role in re-establishing acoustic Congolese rumba on the global stage. The group’s recording “Conséquence” achieved international visibility when it was selected as the first track on Barack Obama’s 2021 Summer Playlist, marking a significant moment of global recognition for the musicality of Kékélé and its distinctive voices, and for Congolese rumba.

Today, Nyboma is widely regarded as one of the greatest legends of the classic rumba tradition, a vocalist whose work bridges generations and whose influence continues to resonate across Africa, Latin America, Europe, and internationally. His voice remains instantly recognisable, and his contribution to Congolese rumba stands as one of the legendary greats in the history of African music.

He is celebrated as the Golden Voice of Congolese Rumba, a title that reflects his extraordinary vocal mastery and his enduring influence across generations and continents.
